It’s Christmas Time In The City As Community Lights Are Switching On

Christmas has officially arrived in Edinburgh as communities across the capital switch on their festive lights in a series of ceremonies across the capital.

Christmas has officially arrived in Edinburgh as communities across the capital switch on their festive lights in a series of ceremonies across the capital.

Following on from the traditional Light Night which saw 12,000 people gathered along the Royal Mile as the City Centre lit up, Christmas cheer is spreading to the rest of the city as communities switch on their festive illuminations – the latest being both St Patrick's Square and Corstorphine Old Parish Church this evening.

Delivered by the Council through the company Field and Lawn, Christmas 2019 will be brighter than ever before.   All community Christmas trees will be decorated with new lights and have significantly more lights than before.  The tree lighting is designed to ensure maximum illumination and impact.

In the past year, six community Christmas trees have been successfully planted and will be lit and unveiled this year.  In 2020 at least 10 more will be planted for future celebrations.

For the first time ever, Stenhouse will join the annual celebrations by hosting a ceremony on Thursday (5 December) around their newly relocated tree.
